What is PCOS and what does my diagnosis mean? Or are my symptoms indicative of PCOS?

Here are the criteria to make the diagnosis of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome applicable. You should have 2 out of 3:

  1. cysts on your ovaries

  2. high level of androgens (male pattern hair growth or blood tests)

  3. irregular or absent menstrual cycles

What is happening?

Because your body is not ovulating regularly, your hormones attempt to compensate and therefore can become imbalanced. Your ovaries can form extra fluid-filled sacs (cysts), which produce hormones called androgens. An excess of androgens can cause excessive male-pattern hair growth acne, weight changes, menstrual dysfunction, and infertility.

Why does this happen?

PCOS is due to a hormonal imbalance. If we look at what influences your hormone levels and your menstrual cycle, we can get an idea of why this is happening.

  1. Your nervous system - high levels of stress can discourage ovulation. It restrains the release of reproductive hormones necessary for ovulation and endometrial lining development. The connection between your brain and your ovaries is strong and sensitive!

  2. Your blood sugar balance - people with PCOS often have insulin resistance or blood sugar dysfunction. It’s a vicious cycle in which high levels of insulin and excess adipose (fat) tissue cause excess androgens and vice versa. This not only lead to excess hair growth or weight changes, but they can constrain follicle formation leading to irregular menstruation. There is a strong connection between insulin and PCOS, making dietary changes a significant part of the treatment.

  3. Your diet, your nutrients - inflammatory foods and poor quality foods place stress on your digestive system and make it more difficult for your body to balance blood sugar levels.

  4. Possibly long-term low-grade inflammation - this may be from the rise in glucose levels, your diet, or your nervous system.

Every case in PCOS is different! We all have different constitutions, genetics, body types, lifestyles, hormone balances, diets, and more.
