Diving into the IVF journey can feel like quite a lot physically, emotionally, and mentally. If you’re looking for support during this process, acupuncture can be a complementary therapy that may benefit you at each stage.

Whether you’re undergoing IVF, IUI, or ICSI, integrating acupuncture may improve the chances of a healthy and positive outcome. As well, by focusing on overall well-being, it can help to decrease the side effects of medications.

What are the benefits of Acupuncture for IVF?

  • Acupuncture regulates hormone levels that are crucial for fertility

  • It increases blood flow to the uterus and ovarian follicles

  • Treatments target blockages, growths, scar tissue, and adhesions

  • Acupuncture focuses on optimising reproductive and overall health

  • Acupuncture reduces stress and anxiety, which is often a significant aspect for those trying to conceive

How does Acupuncture assist IVF?

  • Research states acupuncture to improve blood flow in the body – by targeting specific areas and channels, I can direct nutrient-rich blood towards the reproductive organs to build up uterine lining, improve egg/sperm quality, and nourish embryos as they grow

  • By reducing the side effects of IVF, acupuncture can help make the IVF process more gentle and comfortable. Common side effects include bloating, fatigue, bowel changes, headaches, hot flushes, and dizziness.

  • Studies have shown that integrating acupuncture during your IVF process can contribute to higher success rates by influencing factors that impact fertility

Where does Acupuncture sit with embryo transfers?

Acupuncture can play a supportive role in embryo transfers in many different ways.

  • Treatments can help to calm and reduce stress, support your emotions and cortisol levels, in order to let your body feel safe to focus on the reproductive process

  • Depending on your presentation, I may focus on assisting fluid regulation (AKA bloating) to allow for better flow in the abdomen

  • Acupuncture stimulates the body’s natural painkillers, which helps to reduce discomfort or cramping after your embryo transfer

  • I will choose evidence-based points to improve embryo implantation by increasing blood flow to the uterus. Treatments aim to build a thick endometrial lining in order to provide a healthy environment for your embryo

The rollercoaster of the fertility and IVF journey should be one with support. I hope to make the ride as smooth as possible and offer as much education and guidance as I can. Treatments support and complement your medical processes while tailoring to your unique needs and timelines. If you have any questions or if you are about to embark on your IVF journey, reach out sooner than later and I would be happy to discuss how acupuncture may help to increase your chances of success with IVF.
